Bearing the distinction of the closest lodging facility to the Golden Gate Bridge, the historic Lodge at the Presidio has been fully renovated and is now open to guests.

Once a part of the Montgomery Street Barracks complex built to house U.S. Army artillery companies, infantry and Calvary troops 1895–1897, the property has 42 rooms spread over three stories. Guests enjoy contemporary interior design, original art and views of the bridge and the 300-acre Presidio forest.

Historic features have been carefully preserved, including the building’s military history as an enlisted men’s barracks. Two grand staircases were restored to their original glory, including one hidden for years behind modern walls. In a storage space on the third floor, guests can see exposed brick and an original wall sign stenciled with the words “Maximum Occupancy Five Men.”

The property boasts numerous eco features based on adaptive reuse building principles. Construction followed standards set by the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environment Design, with a cutting-edge seismic strengthening process involving carbon and glass fibers; water-efficient plumbing and landscaping; energy-efficient on-demand power in guestrooms activated by key cards; restored original windows with updated weather stripping and sound-reducing glass; and insulation in walls and roofs created from recycled blue jeans.
