Smaller and less known than Italy’s famed Como, Garda and Maggiore lakes, the northern Italian lake of Orta is the setting for a relaxing winter getaway. Located just 45 minutes from Milan’s Malpensa Airport (MXP), the Relais & Chateaux property reflects traditional Moorish style, complete with a soaring tower. Built in 1879 over a 30-year period by architect Angelo Colla, the villa is surrounded by lovely gardens that sweep down to the shores of the lake.

The intimate three-story property has 14 elegant rooms and suites that include four classic rooms with balconies and two deluxe rooms with double-canopied beds. The 19^th-century décor contains Arabic elements, while wood parquet floors and marble bathrooms add rich elements. The two-star Michelin restaurant and its Mediterranean cuisine are under the direction of chef and co-owner Antonino Cannavacciuolo, who is featured on Italy’s version of the popular restaurant show Kitchen Nightmares.
