Smaller and less known than Italy’s famed Como, Garda and Maggiore lakes, the northern Italian lake of Orta is the setting for a relaxing winter getaway. Located just 45 minutes from Milan’s Malpensa Airport (MXP), the Relais & Chateaux property reflects traditional Moorish style, complete with a soaring tower. Built in 1879 over a 30-year period by architect Angelo Colla, the villa is surrounded by lovely gardens that sweep down to the shores of the lake.
The intimate three-story property has 14 elegant rooms and suites that include four classic rooms with balconies and two deluxe rooms with double-canopied beds. The 19th-century décor contains Arabic elements, while wood parquet floors and marble bathrooms add rich elements. The two-star Michelin restaurant and its Mediterranean cuisine are under the direction of chef and co-owner Antonino Cannavacciuolo, who is featured on Italy’s version of the popular restaurant show Kitchen Nightmares. WiFi is complimentary, as is daily gourmet breakfast served in the lounge or in the comfort of your room. Shuttle service from the Orta-Miasino railway station is provided, and airport transfers are easily arranged.

Back in the 1990s, when I was traveling on my airline pilot father’s standby passes, there weren’t many ways for passengers to cancel ambient noise while in flight. Much has changed in travel technology since those days; and although I’ll forever miss Dusty the Delta Air Lion, I’m happy to report no more need for plastic ear foam.
