Known for natural beauty and the world’s highest tides, New Brunswick is a mecca for outdoor lovers — and autumn is the perfect time to plan an adventure. One of Canada’s three Maritime Provinces, New Brunswick shares a border with Maine, and offers plenty in the way of fresh seafood and spectacular coastline. Plan your itinerary to include Breakfast with the Seals, a guided sunrise kayak tour from Kennebacasis River to Sea Dog Cove. Next, it’s a headlamp hike through Nature Trust’s Sea Dog Cove Nature Preserve on Kingston Peninsula. Learn about this local ecosystem and its wildlife while enjoying breakfast in the fresh air and watching the resident seals frolic in the cove.
On Miscou Island, nearly half the landscape is composed of peat bogs that reflect the best of fall color changes. You can admire foliage from numerous locations, including beaches along Plage de Miscou near Miscou Harbour, Plage Isle Miscou on the island’s western side and Plage de découvertes on the eastern shore. Don’t miss Miscou Island Lighthouse on the island’s tip. Protecting ships and their crews since 1856, this heritage building is constructed from wood with an octagonal tower.
Head out into the sparkling waters of Miramichi Bay with Miramichi Bay Outfitters to fish for salmon, striped bass, sturgeon, smallmouth bass, musky and other species that head to the bay during autumn months. Curated river and bay tours include everything you need, from safety gear to fishing tackle — and you’ll be in the company of a captain with more than three decades of experience.
Interested in seeing something larger than a sturgeon? Whale-watching tours with Jolly Breeze Tall Ship and Zodiac Whale Adventures offers guided excursions through mid-October. The tall ship Jolly Breeze of St. Andrews (a steel replica of the 1900’s vessel Jolie Brise of La Havre) sails through Passamaquoddy Bay on 3.5-hour tours to spot for minke, humpbacks, finbacks and North Atlantic right whales. Opt for the 2.5-hour V.I.P. Speed Vessel tour, and you’ll zip into the Bay of Fundy on a rigid-hulled Zodiac vessel for a chance to see whales, porpoises, seals and more.
