As Air China and China Eastern Airlines, two major carriers to Asia, engage in an all-out price war to attract passengers, fares are available at an incredible rate in business class.
The two state-controlled carriers are battling it out for the upper hand in what’s soon to be the world’s biggest market. Markets suggest that, although the big airlines are filling planes, they’re only doing so by undercutting each other on tickets — not sustainable in the long run, according to a report by Bloomberg.
Typically the winner of a price war is the player with the lowest expenses, which may mean bad news for China Eastern, with the highest costs of the two. Last year, China Eastern cost 14 per cent more than Air China, and has not been as successful in cutting costs as the competing airline. It also has the smallest presence in the domestic market of the two.
On the other hand, China Eastern is the main full-service carrier in China’s second-busiest passenger airport in Shanghai (PVG), which gives them an upper hand over Air China.
It is not yet clear which airline will come out on top, but it may not matter to business-class passengers looking for some good fares. Some of the best rates available currently for business-class passengers are as follows:
New York (JFK) to Singapore (SIN): $2,530 USD
New York to Tokyo (NRT): $2,065 USD
Los Angeles (LAX) to Shanghai: $2,945 USD
Houston (IAH) to Seoul (INC): $3,860 USD
