Global Traveler surveyed its readers last week via an online survey to learn more about travelers’ plans pre- and post-COVID-19 shutdowns. According to respondents, 78 percent are planning a trip in 2020, with 55 percent saying they are more likely to travel domestically first. Nearly all, at 85 percent, canceled trips because of the pandemic.

When asked how they will likely travel when they begin traveling again, more than half (64 percent) answered plane; next up was 23 percent planning to travel by car. A majority (88 percent) plan to travel for leisure, not business, on their first trip.

When it comes to domestic travel, we asked respondents where and when they would travel domestically. Nearly all gave a timeline from late July onward, and the destinations spanned the country, from national parks to Florida to Hawai’i. When posed with the same question internationally, the timeline given was slightly later, with people planning for September 2020 and beyond; a large number of respondents also said they had no international travel planned at the moment.

As a follow-up question to have you had to cancel a trip, we asked have you rebooked the trip and for when. Overwhelmingly, trips have not been rebooked yet. We also asked, “What do you anticipate will be the biggest change in your travel lifestyle post-COVID-19?” Answers varied, from “far less of it” and “caution” to “loss of work,” “more aware,” “less options,” “more trips by car and no mega ships” and “wearing a mask and more precautions.”

How can airlines make travelers feel safer? Among the answers received were “fewer seats and more space on the plane,” “stay diligent in cleanliness policies,” “keep communicating,” “clean, clean, clean,” “keep fares reasonable” and “nothing, just go back to normal,” among other responses.

Are you planning 2020 travel? If so, to where and when? Are you more likely to travel domestically or internationally? How can airlines make you feel safer? Tell us about it. Email us at [email protected]. Please include your full name and location.

Mindfulness City in Kingdom of Bhutan Unveiled as Future Economic Hub

In front of an audience of 30,000 Kingdom of Bhutan residents and officials, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck presented his vision for a new economic hub in Bhutan. Located between India to the south and China to the north, Bhutan is one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. Bhutan came late to global tourism. It opened its borders to international visitors in 1974 and, while tourism definitely increased, residents are enduring “light” rush-hour traffic in Thimphu, its capital city, as the only Asian capital without traffic lights.
