Global Power City Index Names Most Attractive Cities

The Global Power City Index 2017 named London, New York and Tokyo as the most attractive cities in the world. The report compares 44 major destinations on their ability to attract both individuals and organizations. Rankings are based on 70 facets, bunched into six categories — economy, research and development, cultural interaction, livability, environment and accessibility.

London, New York and Tokyo all remain in their spots from last year, with London at No. 1, New York at No. 2 and Tokyo at No. 3. Tokyo did slightly improve its cultural interaction score from last year, but not enough to overtake New York.

Overall, European cities scored high on livability and environment for the most part, while U.S. cities reigned supreme in research and development. Seven Asian cities took over the Top 10 in the economy category. For the first time ever, Dubai and Buenos Aires were represented on the index, with Dubai ranking 23rd and Buenos Aires ranking 40th. Sydney made it into the Top 10 for the first time in seven years.

“In the last 10 years, the report has shown that the power of cities has been changing as a result of changes in the macro environment. Our report suggests that a city’s overall power cannot be determined by a single factor, such as economy, but needs to take into account the many factors that define the city. Rapid urbanization and globalization pose both challenges and opportunities for cities, so for cities to thrive, they need to accurately assess their specific strengths and weaknesses, as well as their relative positioning against other cities. We believe that our GPCI report can help policy makers and global companies achieve smarter planning and decision-making in their efforts to thrive in today’s highly competitive global environment,” said Hiroo Ichikawa, executive director, The Mori Memorial Foundation, which produces the annual index.

Hotel Van Zandt Review

One step onto Austin’s Rainey Street and you’ll feel like you’ve joined the cool kids at the best playground in the city. Just behind the cottage bars, pint-sized skyscrapers soar. One of them, Hotel Van Zandt, the Rainey district's pièce de resistance, beckons with a song-like spirit —apropos because the independently owned property, rife with music motifs, was named after beloved singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Sixteen stories high, the hotel embodies Austin’s lust for music, manifesting with a vinyl corner; trumpet chandeliers; myriad musical references; replica vintage posters in frames; and its own live music venue, which doubles as its acclaimed restaurant, Geraldine’s. Don’t miss the mesmerizing installation of colorful origami-like birds composed from vinyl records that flitter from an old phonograph.
