Germany is planning to lead the way in the introduction of driverless trains, which it plans to add to its rail system in the next five years. Deutsche Bahn, the German rail company, said it would plan to introduce the new technology as early as 2021. “I expect us to be able to operate parts of our network completely automatically by 2021, 2022 or 2023,” Rüdiger Grube, chairman, DB, told German newspapers last month. “Autonomous driving can be difficult in a complex rail network that includes high-speed and regional passenger and goods trains, but it is possible.” DB said it would start testing the driver-less trains on a 30-kilometer track in the eastern state of Saxony soon. There have already been tests conducted in the Ore Mountains near the Czech Republic. DB started preparing its drivers for the seemingly inevitable fact they will soon be phased out. The trains will use cameras and technology that can detect obstacles on the track and stop the train before a possible collision. Similar technology is being tested for cars by major companies like Google, General Motors and Lyft.
