The Argentine town of San Antonio de Areco is the setting for the annual Festival of Gauchos. From Nov. 1–9, traditional cowboys from all corners of the country assemble to showcase their equestrian skills during the festival’s 75th anniversary. Music, dance and craft exhibitions are part of the fun. The festival culminates with the Dia de la Tradicion, during which hundreds of gauchos in their finest traditional dress, replete with richly colored ponchos, wide-brimmed hats and horses decked in flashy ornamental silver decorations parade along the town’s cobbled streets.
Shake off the festival dust at La Bamba de Areco, one of Argentina’s most historic estancias. Hundred-year-old plane trees frame the entrance drive, while the colonial style buildings sit within a wide park. The old guard tower houses a library, while other spaces include massage facilities, a billiards room, boutique and restaurant.
