The Vancouver International Film Festival is still in full swing around the city, showcasing more than 300 films originating in 76 different countries. Supplemented by workshops, screenings and talks with filmmakers, the event will wrap up Oct. 13. Next up is the Apple Festival, taking place at the UBC Botanical Garden Oct. 14–15. Now in its 26th year, the festival features an apple tasting tent, displays, family-friendly activities and storytelling sessions in the Children’s Area. Visitors can enjoy demonstrations of cider pressing and grafting, and take part in discussions led by Master Gardeners pertinent to apple growing and fruit tree cultivation.
The Vancouver International Writers Festival will unroll on Granville Island Oct. 16–22. More than 110 local and international authors will gather, including Mexico’s National Journalism Prize award winner Diego Enrique Osorno, Canadian authors Margaret Atwood and Barbara Gowdy, the United Kingdom’s Polari First Book Prize winner Dean Atta and leading Italian literary novelist Nicola Lagioia.
Nov. 2–8, the city reverberates with the sounds of ISCM World New Music Days. Featuring artists from almost 50 countries, this festival — hosted by the International Society for Contemporary Music — includes more than 25 concerts by Canadian artists, and a performance by The National Arts Centre Orchestra of Ottawa conducted by Alexander Shelly and presented with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Finally, serenity reigns Nov. 4–5 with the Vancouver Tea Festival, presented by the Vancouver Tea Society and Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden at the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Vancouver. Along with a tea marketplace, visitors can enjoy workshops, tea tastings and tea-themed presentations.
