Asia’s cruise industry continues to set records as it grows by leaps and bounds. According to a recent study released by Cruise Lines International Association, Asia shows the most growth year over year in terms of cruise passengers. From 2014 to 2015, cruise lines welcomed 24 per cent more travellers, amounting to 2.08 million last year. “While we expected Asia to experience record-breaking growth in cruise travel, we are astonished at the rate at which the region is emerging as one of the most significant cruise destinations and cruise source markets in the world,” said Zinan Liu, chair, CLIA North Asia. The region expects 1,560 sailings this year, a 43 per cent increase from last year. Total number of cruise ships sailing in the region rose 15 per cent, with 60 total, 14 of which operate year-round. Cruise lines are also offering greater capacity, with the ability to carry 3.2 million passengers in 2016. Trends point toward shorter cruise lengths, with travellers choosing two- or three-day cruises over week-long itineraries. The demographic showing the most interest in cruising is Chinese travellers, who account for nearly half of all Asian cruise passengers, as well as younger travellers, with the majority 40 years of age or younger. Asian cruise passengers as a whole prefer to cruise within Asia, rather than travel outside the region for similar cruise experiences. As cruise demand grows, more countries open ports to welcome tourists. The Asian cruise industry reaches 204 destinations across 17 countries to date. Japan is the most popular destination, offering 1,526 port calls this year. China, the second most popular destination, follows behind at 850 port calls. The most visited single port for the year is Jeju Island, accounting for 460 port calls. “The cruise industry has been nimble and responded quickly to the demand for cruise travel in Asia by delivering cruise ships with amenities and experiences tailored to Asian travellers.
