Frontier Airlines Incident Brings Unaccompanied Minor Travel to Forefront

Frontier Airlines made headlines last week after bad weather forced a flight diversion. Siblings wound up separated in different hotel rooms with other stranded children and were attended to by a Frontier Airlines chaperone.

According to a report by the Orlando Sentinel, the siblings were en route to Orlando (MCO), returning home from a visit with grandparents in Des Moines, Iowa (DSM). A storm caused the flight to divert to Atlanta (ATL), where parents say the kids were placed in hotel rooms for the evening after being fed Rice Crispy Treats and water for dinner.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, there are no federal guidelines for unaccompanied minor travel. Each airline is responsible for coming up with and implementing its own unaccompanied minor guidelines. Frontier Airlines makes no mention on the official policy page what happens if a flight is diverted.

United Air Lines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and more offer options for unaccompanied minors traveling on domestic flights.

According to the parents of the kids sent to a hotel room, there was no attempt by the airline to get in contact with the parents of the displaced children.

“In keeping with Frontier’s policy, the children were attended to at all times by a Frontier supervisor, placed in a hotel room overnight, and provided with food. Our records show that the children were in contact with their mother before being transported to the hotel and with their father the following morning before leaving on the continued flight. We understand how an unexpected delay caused by weather can be stressful for a parent and our goal is to help passengers get to their destinations as quickly and safely as possible,” said Jonathan Freed, a spokesperson for the airline, in a statement to NBC News.
