If you had dreams of train travel across France, it may be time to rethink your plans. Last month, France’s Ministry of Tourism announced it will end overnight train service to and from Paris. The government, which operates the national rail line SNCF, will no longer provide financial support for sleeper routes. It has opened that support up to bids from competitors, but if no proposal is received and accepted by July 1, all overnight service (with the exception of three routes: Paris to Briancon, Rodez, and Latour de Carol) will cease operation. The decision all comes down to cost: ““The economics are stacked against night trains — once you add [competition from] budget airlines and hefty track access fees,” Mark Smith, founder, train travel blog The Man in Seat Sixty-One, told The Guardian. Sleeper train service seems to be fading across Europe. In 2014, a German rail line stopped overnight routes between France and Germany. In 2013, overnight service ended from Paris to Madrid and Barcelona.
