A U.S.-based cruise line is the first in the world to gain sensory inclusiveness certification from KultureCity, a nonprofit dedicated to accessibility for people with invisible disabilities.

Carnival Cruise Line, one of the lines operated by Carnival Corp., began to roll out a program to bring sensory inclusivity training to its entire fleet. The program was introduced in October, and is expected to span the entire fleet by March 2020.

The certification comes with expansive training for guest-facing staff members throughout the fleet. The training, according to Carnival, includes teaching staff to understand and help guests with sensory needs and disabilities, including autism, down syndrome, PTSD and more.

The fleet also now carries sensory bags to help sensitive guests. The bags contain measures to help them deal with sensory overload, like noise-cancelling headphones and fidget toys. Guests can also get sensitivity-identifying lanyards to help other guests be aware of those with the disorders.

“Carnival Cruise Line and KultureCity share a heartfelt commitment to acceptance and inclusivity. Working together, all of our guests can maximize their enjoyment and be the truest versions of themselves during their time on board,” said Vicky Rey, vice president of guest care and communications, ADA responsibility officer, Carnival Cruise Line.

Carnival is going above KultreCity’s requirements by also working to complete additional certification training from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards, ensuring guests will always be at the cutting edge of sensory and special needs inclusivity.

Carnival is the first line to gain the endorsement of KultureCity, but other cruise lines also made strides to help communities with sensitivity issues. Royal Caribbean Cruise Line offers autism-friendly ships and Autism on the Seas keeps a list of certified ships appropriate for guests with autism.
