The Fairmont brand makes tracks for Ireland, recently signing the historic Carton House property, with plans to transform the historic estate by the end of 2020.

Carton House is one of Ireland’s most historic country homes, located 20 minutes from Dublin. The estate dates to 1176, though the current home was built in 1739. When branded as a Fairmont property, it will become the first such property in Ireland, the fourth in the United Kingdom and the oldest Fairmont property worldwide.

When opened, the new Fairmont Carton House will offer 170 guestrooms and suites, wellness facilities, conference and events space and two 18-hole championship golf courses. On-site dining plans include a lobby bar and three restaurants, including a golf club restaurant and specialty eatery.

“Fairmont Carton House will join the ranks of the iconic Savoy in London and Fairmont St. Andrews in Scotland and the recently signed Fairmont Windsor Park, becoming the first Fairmont hotel in Ireland. The Fairmont brand is known for its history and impressive locations and we feel it is the ideal brand under which to bring this iconic, historic hotel into the Accor family,” said Thomas Dubaere, COO, Accor, Northern Europe. “The signing of Fairmont Carton House reflects our expertise in the luxury segment and reinforces our commitment to growing our luxury offering across the United Kingdom and Ireland.”

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
