Soak up the Sun in Zicatela, Mexico

Head to Zicatela on the southwestern coast of Mexico for three days of surf, sand and relaxation. Located at Puerto Escondido, it’s a perfect destination for a low-key trip.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival to Puerto Escondido and stay at Villas Carrizalillo
Day 2 Surf at Zicatela beach
Day 3 Spend time in Puerto Escondido before your departure

Highlights of the trip

  • Surfing at Zicatela beach
  • Sample traditional Mexican cuisine
  • Browse a local market
  • Visit a beach bar

Day 1

Zicatela is most easily accessed via Puerto Escondido Airport. International flights must connect through Mexico City (MEX) or Oaxaca (OAX). Stay at the boutique hotel Villas Carrizalillo during your visit. The secluded property is tucked away on a cliffside overlooking the bay of Carrizalillo. Walk to the nearby Rinconada shopping area to browse the shops and grab dinner. Almoraduz Cocina de Autor serves seasonal Mexican dishes with tasting menus and vegetarian options.

Day 2

Zicatela is known as a prime surfing destination so head to the beach and hit the waves. There are plenty of restaurants along the beach on Calle Del Morro to enjoy a bite and fuel up after a morning of surfing. Spend some time here strolling the shops and cafés. Enjoy a drink or two at one of the beach bars. Next, make your way to the southeastern stretch of the beach, La Punta. This relaxed beach area is popular among fitness fanatics. Expect to see people running and practicing yoga. Make sure you’re near the beach later in the day so you can experience the spectacular sunset.

Day 3

Spend the rest of your trip exploring Puerto Escondido. Head to Mercato Benito Juarez, located about two miles from the beach. The market is a great place to stock up on souvenirs for your loved ones, and yourself! You’ll find local delicacies like Oaxacan chocolate and handmade items, including pottery, all of which will remind you of your trip once you return home.
