Day 1

Saudi Arabia is a complex country, rich and ready for discovery. Here, you’ll find a mesmerizing dance of history, commerce, culture and religion. And speaking of commerce, you’ll find plenty of shopping in Riyadh, with malls open as late as 11 p.m. Begin your itinerary with a leisurely afternoon of shopping. Gold is one item you should consider purchasing in Riyadh.

Day 2

On day two, delve deeper into Riyadh’s history with a visit to Masmak Palace, a sand–colored fortress. In 1902, King Abdul Aziz Ibn Saud scaled these walls to regain control of the city. Just outside of the city is the camel market, and if time and schedule allow, you can catch a camel race while in the Kingdom.

Day 3

A short flight on day three brings you to Hofuf, on the city’s eastern edge. Most of the country’s dates are grown here, so upon arrival, enjoy a warm welcome of dates and Arabic coffee, and learn more about the date-farming process. In the afternoon, wander the city’s sidewalk vendors and tiny shops, haggling over the silver Bedouin jewelry Hofuf is famous for.

Day 4

Another short flight and Jeddah is on the schedule for day four. Acquaint yourself with the gleaming port city on the Red Sea by strolling part of the Corniche, 30-some miles along the coast dotted with more than 400 sculptures. End the day with a dinner cruise on the Red Sea.

Day 5

Wander the lively Balad, or Old Jeddah, on day five, admiring the pink-hued homes built of limestone chiseled out of Red Sea coral reef. You can also buy more gold, or other items, at Souk Al Alawi. At night, fly to Medina, but find accommodations outside of the city, as non-Muslims cannot enter.

Day 6

Rise early on day six to make the four-hour drive to Madain Saleh. Enjoy the stunning scenery along the way. Madain Saleh is carved into the sides of the scarlet mountains, tombs created by the Nabataeans between 100 BC and 100 AD. There are 140 tombs to explore. End the night visiting a Bedouin camp for a traditional meal and camping at the base of the rock mountains.
