European Passengers Face Airport Delays

If you’re traveling within Europe this summer, arrive early at airports and expect major delays. Last week, eight late evening Air France long-haul flights to Shanghai (PVG), Hong Kong (HKG), Rio de Janeiro (GIG) and Sao Paulo (GRU), were delayed leaving Paris (CDG) until after midnight.

Although Paris doesn’t have a strict curfew like London Heathrow (LHR) and Frankfurt (FRA), airlines are fined if flights take off after 0000 hours. In this case, the late departures resulted in a $326,912 fine for Air France.

“During this busy summer travel season, airline travelers have become victims of the disproportionate impact that the implementation of new EU regulation is having on the flow of traffic at European airports,” said Thomas Reynaert, managing director, Airlines for Europe.  “The regulation relates to the reinforcement of checks against the relevant database of external borders. Member states need to take all necessary measures now to prevent such disruption and deploy appropriate staff and resources to carry out the stricter checks. Queuing for up to four hours has been the top record these days. Airports at Madrid (MAD), Palma (PMI), Lisbon (LIS), Lyon (LYS), Paris Orly (ORY), Milan (MXP) and Brussels (BRU) are producing shameful pictures of devastated passengers in front of immigration booths, in lines stretching hundreds of meters.”

Trade body Airlines for Europe urges the authorities to take action to reduce the delays.

On its website, Air France advises passengers departing Paris CDG to report two hours in advance for short-haul and three hours in advance for long-haul flights.
