If you’re looking for fun, innovative ways to get your kids engaged in history when traveling, English Historic Cities nailed it with its new interactive app. The new project, funded by the Discover England Fund, is comprised of the fascinating English cities of Bath, Canterbury, Cambridge, Chester, Carlisle, Durham, Greenwich, Lancaster, Lincoln, Oxford, Salisbury, Stratford and York.

Once downloaded, visitors to each heritage city can use their phone camera to discover 3D reconstructions, augmented reality displays and 360-degree panoramas; and hear stories “narrated” by famous figures from the past such as William Shakespeare, Bede the Venerable, Countess Ela of Salisbury and the Seventh Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion, who share tales of intrigue, scientific discovery and exciting stories from long ago.

Along the way, the app allows kids to access fun facts such as how the Lincoln Cathedral maintained its status as the world’s tallest structure for 249 years; how the city of Carlisle was put to siege more times than any other city in the United Kingdom; how astronomers at the Greenwich Observatory invented the concept of global time; how the Magna Carta document, on view in Salisbury Cathedral, served as the inspiration for the U.S. Constitution; and that it’s an authenticated fact scholars have actually been known to study themselves to death in Oxford’s Bodleian Library.
