In a week when Florida aviation already dealt with flight cancellations and delays thanks to bad weather, a flight originating in Orlando was delayed for two hours due to one passenger’s emotional support animal.
According to reporting by dallasnews.com, the passenger cleared her pet ahead of time with Frontier Airlines, but neglected to disclose the fact her support animal was actually a squirrel.
Frontier recently announced changes to its emotional support animal policies. According to its website, several stipulations precede the ability to bring a service animal on board. These stipulations include the service animal must be a cat or dog, must be in a stowable carrier and the airline must be notified 48 hours in advance of the flight. These guidelines are scheduled to go into effect on Nov. 1. Global Traveler could not find information on Frontier’s emotional support animal policy prior to this Nov. 1 change.
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, airlines are able to exclude animals too large or heavy to be accommodated in the cabin, or those which pose a risk to other passengers, cause a significant disruption of service or are prohibited from entering another country.
According to Fox8, which reported on the incident, the woman refused to leave after the airline discovered the rodent. Authorities were called and the woman was escorted from the plane.
As of press time, Frontier Airlines did not respond to Global Traveler’s request for comment via email.
