Eccentric Block Island Hotel Reopens In Time For A Late Summer Getaway

Aug 9, 2013
Daily / Exclusive

Long a New England landmark, Block Island’s grand old Surf Hotel — closed for several years — is once again open and presiding over Crescent Beach and Old Harbor. Steps from the ferry landing in the center of the picturesque town of New Shoreham, the Victorian hotel’s long veranda with its row of rocking chairs has been a familiar sight to visitors since 1876. Quaint and quirky touches include shared baths for some rooms, along with authentic tin ceilings, Tiffany glass lamps and a giant chess set.

A short walk down the main street delivers guests to the award-winning Koru Eco Spa. Named for the Maori word koru, meaning renewal, the spa features the Block Island Organics skincare line, blended from organic botanicals and pure ingredients. A full range of facials, hair services, nail services and massages are offered, including the Block Island Sacred Stone Massage, with smooth, rounded stones hand-gathered from the island’s beaches. Body treatments, each named for a separate Block Island beach, include the fragrant Crescent Beach with a choice of sugar-, sea salt- or coffee-based exfoliating scrub.

On the Road

As I write this letter, I am halfway across the Atlantic Ocean on my return from an epic golf trip in Ireland. The weather was magnificent: sunshine and no rain ... quite unusual by Irish standards. We were happy to leave our rain gear and extra warm clothing in the hotel rooms as we headed out every day.
