Remember Eastern Air Lines? Founded in 1926, the carrier was one of the big guys in the U.S. airline market until it’s untimely dissolution in 1991.
Initially Pitcairn Aviation, the airline took off when it earned a contract to fly mail between New York City and Atlanta. It changed hands a few times early in its 65-year history, landing on Eastern Air Lines in 1934.
A group of investors aiming to operate a charter airline to fill in for carriers experiencing scheduling or equipment issues filed an application last week with the U.S. Department of Transportation seeking to resurrect the Eastern Air Lines name, logo and various trademarks.
If all goes according to plan, a new Eastern Air Lines could take to the skies as early as next year.
