There’s a magic to Budapest that’s hard to define. It may be the light or scents or even sounds — regardless, a great way to get a feel for this beautiful location is through its outstanding collection of museums. Here are a few to consider:

Hungarian National Museum

Hungarian National Museum, dating to 1802, is a great place to form an overview of the city’s rich history. It’s home to important permanent collections including textiles, weapons, pewter, musical instruments, ceramics, glass, maps, jewelry and toys. Not for the faint of heart: The Instruments of Punishment Collection, which showcases a selection of truly unforgettable devices.

Hungarian National Gallery

Equally notable, Hungarian National Gallery is home to the nation’s most important art collections. Occupying space within the Buda Castle complex, this gallery boasts more than 6,000 paintings; 11,000 drawings; 2,100 sculptures; and 5,000 prints. Between viewings, stretch your legs and enjoy breathtaking views of the city from the terrace encircling the castle’s dome.

Aquincum Museum and Archeological Park

Slip even deeper into the city’s past at Aquincum Museum and Archeological Park, where exhibitions illustrate the geological and political history of the country, dating back to the days when it was part of the Roman province of Pannonia. The city’s original foundations, with sections more than 2,000 years old, are also on view.

Budapest Pinball Museum

For something lighter, head to Budapest Pinball Museum, where more than 130 pinball machines are on display. Try your skills at unique games, and enjoy the nostalgia of the arcade- like setting. The assembled pinball machines rank as one of the world’s premier collections. You can even reserve the museum’s Game Galaxy — part vintage American diner, part pinball alley — for meetings and events.

Museum of Sweets & Selfies

Finally, don’t miss Museum of Sweets & Selfies, a popular venue for photo ops. Visitors can nibble their way across the two-story museum, snuggle into a bed of sprinkles, swing on a strawberry wrecking ball, talk on a banana phone and ride a unicorn. Professional photographers are available, and the museum space can be reserved for meetings or personal gatherings and events.

Hotel Saint Augustine Review

Blending with its Montrose neighborhood like the indigenous and cultivated plants hugging the property’s walkways, the newly built Hotel Saint Augustine opened mid-January 2025. The first Bunkhouse hotel in Houston, Texas, is easily mistaken for garden apartments. Seventy-one guest rooms and suites encompass a tree-lined block. The hotel’s buildings are only two stories tall and also house a lobby, lounge, restaurant and event space. Tucked into a corner of the grounds sits a circular outdoor pool.

Global City Guidebook: Phoenix

Arizona’s capital and most populous city basks beneath the sun year-round, boasting Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses, major sports teams, luxury spas and lively nightclubs. The city lies within the Salt River Valley along the northern reaches of the Sonoran Desert, making for dramatic mountain views and vast desert landscapes beyond. The city itself comprises 15 urban villages, many tracing roots to historical communities. Despite brutally hot summers, various experiences and sites in and around the city combat the heat, such as tubing and kayaking on the Salt River, swimming in any of the city’s six lakes, taking a moonlight hike, or floating in one of a number of the city’s upscale hotel pools.
