Disney Research’s scientific and tech department announced the building of a room that allows electronic devices to be charged wirelessly. Disney’s prototype room harnesses quasi-static cavity resonance to deliver power to mobile devices by generating magnetic fields inside specially built structures which then deliver power to electronic items in the room.

“This new innovative method will make it possible for electrical power to become as ubiquitous as WiFi,” said Alanson Sample, principal research scientist, Disney Research. “This in turn, could enable new applications for robots and other small mobile devices by eliminating the need to replace batteries and wires for charging.”

While recent technological advancements allow mobile device users to simply place their phones on a charging mat, eliminating the need for power cords; Disney Research takes it a step further. The technology will allow people to be inside a specifically designed room and receive the charge with their phone in their pocket.

The room must be designed and built out of mostly aluminum to ensure the consistent transmission of power. There also has to be a copper post in the center of the room and factor capacitors throughout the area to separate the magnetic and electric fields.

Once the technology is perfected, travelers may be able to utilize the wireless power source not only in Disney theme parks but also airports and other public areas.
