Wrap Up a Denver Visit at the Museum of Nature & Science

Through Feb. 5, 2017, Denver’s Museum of Nature & Science presents Mummies: New Secrets from the Tombs, a deep look at mummies from ancient Egypt and Peru.

Responsible for some of the world’s oldest mummies dating back 7,000 years, Peruvian and Chilean cultures left behind a record of rituals and DNA that reveal fascinating clues into the past. Through the use of CT scans, 3D computer modeling and sophisticated DNA analysis, researchers have been able to compose a more complete view of how people lived thousands of years ago.

Highlights include a replica walk-in tomb, an exploration station, and the Gilded Lady mummy from Egypt’s Roman era, not on public display since the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. The exhibition also includes mummification tools; mummies of birds, cats and crocodiles; a display of intricately decorated coffins and sarcophaguses; and skull examples showing how head shaping was practiced in ancient Peru.

The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
