On New Year’s Day 2016, Delta Air Lines didn’t cancel a single mainline flight. Now fast-forward to Sunday, Nov. 6, the airline went 200 days without a cancelation — two months shy to the end of the year.
The feat which no other airline has accomplished once seemed impossible to Delta leaders. The celebration brings renewed meaning to the airline’s post-merger Keep Climbing ad campaign promised to “build a better airline, not just a bigger one.”
The airline made a commitment to being reliable to customers, highlighted in a series of social media videos.
“Setting records like this has everything to do with our 80,000 dedicated employees for whom continuous improvement is in their DNA,” said Dave Holtz, senior vice president, operations and customer center, Delta Air Lines. “We’re committed to making this airline great for our global customers and creating the best run airline in the business. Industry-leading operational performance is just part of that equation.”
To put the airlines’ record into context, in 2010 Delta had zero cancel-free days for a year. but in 2011 the number increased to 10 and then climbed to 161 in 2015. The milestone fell on the 311th day of the year and Delta had flown more than 157 million customers on about 910,000 mainline flights. There are quite a few days left of cancel-free opportunity in 2016.
