Delta Air Lines has been busy in the past couple of weeks, upping its tech game with new SkyPro updates, self-service bag drops and facial recognition.

The airline announced the installation of self-service bag drop machines at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport this summer, a $600,000 investment allowing customers to quickly, securely and easily check their own bags. One machine will be equipped to test facial recognition technology to match customers with their passport photos through identification certification, a first for U.S. carriers.

The new self-service bag drop and facial recognition technology are only part of the airline’s recent efforts to streamline the airport process. Delta also worked with the TSA to implement the first automated screening lanes in the United States at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Other innovations include an app helping pilots avoid turbulence for more comfortable flights, interactive airport way-finding maps on the FlyDelta mobile app and enhanced boarding processes.

Delta is also utilizing technology to improve its customer service in the sky. For the first time, the airline is utilizing “big data” to support the customer service role of its employees. The airline is giving flight attendants a prioritized list of customers to recognize on each domestic flight based on details like Medallion status, achieved milestones, recent flight interruptions and standings as a corporate traveler. This will allow for a more personalized travel experience for customers.
