Opening Feb. 23 at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, a new exhibition called Creatures of Light takes a close look at mysterious and seldom-seen life forms that come equipped with their own lighting systems. From familiar fireflies to deep-sea swimmers with built-in bioluminescence and biofluorescence features, this illuminating exhibit includes family activities, models, immersive environments and real creatures that flash and glow.

Visitors can virtually visit environments including a meadow alight with flickering fireflies and learn about their complicated mating signals; a lagoon in Puerto Rico replete with glowing plankton; and caves in New Zealand where glowworms twinkle against the darkness of stone ceilings. There’s also a tank of live GloFish, a species being studied for its ability to detect pollution via fluorescence; and giant models of glimmering mushrooms, jellyfish and fireflies. An interactive coral reef display also sheds light on why coral glows in shades of pink, orange and green.
