The Reputation Institute released its 2016 Country RepTrak, which measures the feelings of the general population toward a particular country. “The 2016 Country RepTrak shows that traditional, objective measures, such as size and economic output have little bearing on the general public’s emotional connection to a nation. Being welcoming, safe and beautiful are the top three drivers of a country’s reputation, and nations with a strong reputation are better positioned to welcome more tourists, increase exports, improve diplomacy and attract foreign investment, knowledge and talent,” said Nicolas Trad, executive partner, The Reputation Institute. After compiling 58,000 ratings earlier this year, the report named Sweden as the top most reputable country in the world, knocking Canada from its top spot and demoting it to second place. Following were Switzerland, Australia, Norway, Finland, New Zealand, Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands. Ratings measured consumer perceptions on countries’ economies, environments, governments and more. Ireland is a new addition to the list, replacing Belgium. Overall, France saw the biggest improvement in reputation, though not enough to make it into the Top 10. Turkey saw a drop in reputation, falling to the bottom of the list. The countries with the worst reputations included Russia, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran and Iraq.
