Coastal Mississippi beckons visitors from across the country with a plethora of casinos. One of the most elegant is Beau Rivage Resort & Casino. The MGM property in Biloxi, Mississippi, celebrated its 25th anniversary last year and recently completed $130 million in enhancements. Before seeing stand-up comic Tig Notaro perform, we dined at new restaurant Coraline’s and were delighted by the ambiance, food and service.

Guests leave the casino floor by entering Coraline’s through an alley-like passageway with a checkerboard tile floor, wrought iron adornments and walls covered with art. Inspired by New Orleans’ historic French Quarter, an abundance of arched doorways and windows adds architectural interest. The restaurant’s cozy atmosphere gives a nod to nature with lush plants, a green color palette, gleaming brass and copper fixtures, and warm brown oak tables. Guests lucky enough to dine beside the massive arched windows are treated to a Gulf view.

The restaurant recently changed its menu, and the knowledgeable staff patiently suggested some popular items. The Gulf-to-table seafood takes center stage with a variety of freshly shucked oyster options and an impressive selection of appetizers — many with a Southern twist. Think seafood-stuffed fried green tomatoes filled with crab, crawfish, andouille sausage and a cream sauce.

Not intimidated by the size, my husband ordered the 14-ounce blackened New York strip (thank goodness our guestroom had a mini fridge) and I had Snapper Coraline’s, a lightly battered fish topped with shrimp atop a bed of asparagus and sautéed potatoes. Both entrees are signature dishes and tasted divine.

For dessert, we ordered coffee and the hummingbird cheesecake brûlée. A thin layer of cake replaced the traditional graham cracker crust, and its shiny caramelized top was adorned with candied pecans. The decadent concoction was a masterful combination of classic Southern sweets. To avoid disappointment, reservations are highly recommended. Coraline’s is open for dinner Thursday–Monday.
