The partial collapse of an under-construction hotel in New Orleans is still being investigated after two workers were found dead and many others injured.

The Hard Rock New Orleans Hotel has been under construction for some time. At the time of the collapse on Saturday, nearly 100 workers were present, according to an article from Nola.com. Most avoided serious injury, but two were killed and others lost for several days. Initially, 18 were taken to a nearby hospital for injuries.

The danger continued beyond the initial collapse, as the remainder of the upright building teetered precariously, threatening to crash. Plans for the new hotel surfaced in 2018, when Hard Rock International announced the $85 million mixed-use development would house 350 hotel rooms, 62 condominiums and plenty of space for meetings.

The building’s collapse is still under investigation, and the downtown neighborhood surrounding the Canal Street property is still closed from residents and visitors for the most part.

Late in the afternoon Saturday, Hard Rock International released a statement that, while Hard Rock International was the eventual manager of the property, the brand was not involved with the construction.

“We want to extend our deepest sympathies to victims of this tragic accident and to their loved ones and friends,” the statement read.

Hard Rock International has hotels and casinos all over the world. The future of the project is uncertain. It has been in the works, in one way or another, since 2007.
