Paramount Theatre in Austin, Texas, celebrates its 108th birthday this year, as well as its 50th Summer Classic Film Series. To commemorate its 50th anniversary, the full schedule includes 120 films and special events. Originally launched in 1975 to help revitalize the theater, the now-thriving establishment and its summer screenings are an Austin tradition.
If you’re traveling to Austin this summer, escape the heat of a Texan summer with a screening and to experience one of the city’s most picturesque and historic landmarks. Hyatt Centric Congress Avenue Austin is right next door, even boasting show posters from Paramount Theatre in guestrooms. Locals also flock to the summer film series.
Highlights of this year’s Summer Classic Film Series include filmmaker Robert Rodriguez being honored with a star on Avenue of Paramount Stars on opening weekend, followed by a Sin City screening and Q&A; John Waters presenting a double feature of Pink Flamingo and Female Trouble, alongside a Q&A; Hitchcock Week; Majestic Ball to celebrate PRIDE with special guests A’Keria C. Davenport, Diamond Dior Davenport and Natalie Lepore; and a live score of Dawn of the Dead by Italian progressive rock band Goblin.

For a city girl like me, stepping into the town square of Jackson, in northwest Wyoming, felt like walking onto a slicker set of the television show Gunsmoke. Wooden sawtooth facades surround Jackson’s Town Square (a.k.a. George Washington Memorial Park). Visitors stroll the boardwalk connecting the Western-style buildings, each with a large window displaying goods, restaurants and art galleries. Iconic arches, assembled with discarded elk antlers from nearby National Elk Refuge, perch on each corner of the town square. Stagecoaches pulled by teams of horses parade other city-dwellers around the park.
