Effective Jan. 1, 2019, China Southern Airlines and SkyTeam will part ways.
According to SkyTeam, China Southern Airlines’ decision to not renew its contract with the alliance reflects the airline’s strategic development, changing trends in global aviation and the evolution of alliances.
The two organizations agreed to make the transition as seamless as possible for China Southern passengers. The separation will run through most of 2019 but is expected for completion by the end of the year.
At the time of publication, China Southern Airlines had not put out a statement.
“Network has always been the foundation of SkyTeam. Our new value proposition retains that strong integrated network and combines it with our continued focus on improving customer experience through technology. China Southern has been a valued member of SkyTeam. We respect its decision and wish it well,” said Kristin Colvile, CEO, SkyTeam.
SkyTeam compiled a comprehensive guide for China Southern Airlines passengers who might have questions about the impending separation. More information will follow as it gets closer and underway.
Following the split, SkyTeam will comprise 19 member airlines serving 1,080 destinations globally. SkyTeam membership grants passengers access to 750 lounges around the world.
The SkyTeam alliance was formed in 2000.
