Fall in the Windy City may include a certain chill in the air — but it’s worth grabbing your coat and heading out for a host of great events. Start with the The Great Chicago Fire Festival: On Oct. 4, Redmoon Theater partners with the City of Chicago and Chicago Park District to present this inaugural, one-day tribute to the indomitable city’s rebound following the Great Fire of 1871. The free celebration takes place on the main branch of the Chicago River with machinery, flames and pyrotechnics.
From Oct. 9–23, the Chicago International Film Festival — in its 50th year — screens 200 films from 50-plus countries at venues citywide. Top bills include the North American debut of the rediscovered and resorted 1929 jazz-age comedy Why Be Good, directed by William A. Seiter. Also a milestone, the Joffrey Ballet will present its first-ever production of Swan Lake (Oct. 15–26) at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University. One of the world’s most popular ballets, this production of Swan Lake is choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon.
