Rio de Janeiro is installing two-dimensional bar codes, or QR codes, on the city’s black and white mosaic sidewalks to provide tourists information about the city. Visitors can download a Smartphone or tablet app and take a picture of the icon. The app reads the bar code and takes them to a website with a map and information about the area in Portuguese, Spanish or English. The first bar code was built Jan. 25 into the sidewalk at Arpoador, a massive boulder that rises at the end of Ipanema beach. The city plans to install 30 of the QR codes at beaches, vistas and historic sites so Rio’s approximately 2 million foreign visitors can learn about the city as they explore.
