Research conducted by Booking.com prior to the COVID-19 global outbreak revealed positive trends for sustainable travel in the future. Approximately seven in 10 U.S. travelers identified sustainable travel as important to them, with 53 percent more determined to make sustainable choices when booking future travel.
Obstacles remain: 41 percent of U.S. travelers do not know how or where to find sustainable travel options, while half believe there aren’t enough sustainable travel options available.
In conjunction with Travalyst, a global partnership founded by Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, and other leading brands, Booking.com recently developed new frameworks to help surface more sustainable accommodation, aviation and experience options across the industry.
Additional findings from Booking.com’s research include:
- A majority of U.S. travelers planned to stay in eco-accommodations in 2020
- Travelers consider alternative modes of transport to reach their destinations, with 15 percent opting for train travel rather than car travel
- Research suggests, when travel is back up and running, more travelers will make the choice to head to less-visited destinations and select alternative modes of transportation
- One in five U.S. travelers associate “sustainable travel and tourism” with reducing waste and recycling plastic
- Almost 50 percent of travelers expressed frustration when an accommodation prevented them from being sustainable in the past
