When my husband and I decided to plan our destination wedding in Chicago, I let him choose the hotel, thinking he would choose one of our regular favorites we stay in every time we’re in the city. Instead, he decided to go for a completely different property we had yet to visit: Warwick Allerton Hotel Chicago. This historic hotel, designated a Chicago landmark, is located on the Magnificent Mile, right above Brooks Brothers, so easy enough for us to find after our cab ride from the train station. We arrived quite a few hours before normal check-in time, but we were both tired from waking up in the wee hours of the morning to make our flight, so we asked if there was any way they could get us in early. Much to our surprise and satisfaction, they could not only get us in but also upgrade us to one of their specialty suites for a very pleasing additional rate. Our suite was perfect for our stay in the city. It featured a large sitting room with a desk, couch and entertainment center, which was excellent for our many family members who dropped by to chat, as well as for our day-of wedding preparations. The bedroom was large as well and both comfortably and stylishly furnished with even more seating and a huge floor-to-ceiling mirror that made getting dressed a breeze. The marble bathroom was nice and big, but I would have appreciated a better showerhead and more sufficient water pressure, but that was my only complaint. I particularly appreciated the addition of an iHome docking station by the bed, so I could listen to music before heading out for the day. A large number of our guests stayed in the hotel as well, and all of them equally enjoyed their visits. The vintage touches paired with the modern décor carried throughout each room. The staff was also entirely pleasant and did their jobs efficiently and with a smile. I will definitely recommend this property for my friends and family visiting the city and look forward to staying there in the future. — Holly Riddle, marketing & sales assistant

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
