When I think of vacation, I think of beaches, sunshine and a mixed drink. Earlier this month I did exactly that in Cancun, Mexico. However, I threw in some historical sightseeing to make it interesting. My trip was unforgettable.
From Los Angeles, I flew via Mexico City to Cancun with Aeromexico. My flight to Mexico City was easy; however, the airport lost my luggage. Luckily, the Aeromexico team worked some magic, and the luggage actually arrived in Cancun before us. Thanks to the staff and the airline’s new Boeing 737 plane, the flight was great. The food was good and there was plenty of inflight entertainment.
The beaches of Cancun are a bit rough, but the white sands and free drinks made our all-inclusive stay at Oasis Sens relaxing and fun. The weather in November/December can be unpredictable; after a few days of sunshine, the clouds moved in, so we decided some sightseeing was a perfect idea. Through the concierge we purchased a tour to visit the Mayan ruin of Chichén Itzá.
Chichén Itzá has seen more than 1,000 years of history within its walls. Located a few hours away via bus in the Yucatan Peninsula, its rich history is visible in every temple and building you see.

Kukulkan Pyramid
The most memorable site was El Castillo, or Kukulkan Pyramid, towering over 75 feet and said to be used for astronomical uses. From March to September at 3 p.m., the sunlight sits in a way to showcase the seven layers of pyramid and a serpent.
The Great Ball Court is another sight I never thought I would be able to see. The court is 225 feet wide and just over 500 feet long, holding an enormous amount of space for the Mayans to hold games. Its most notable feature was the the echoes and sound vibrations that a simple clap or yell can make within its walls.

Great Ball Court
The day filled me with awe, and I suggest anyone going to Cancun take a breather from partying and explore this Yucatan Peninsula destination.
