During a recent trip to New Orleans, my husband and I decided to visit Bacchanal.

By definition, Bacchanal is a wine store with a patio — though it is so much more. Located in the city’s Bywater neighborhood, a quick car ride from the French Quarter, Bacchanal began as a small wine shop.

Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, chefs from all over gathered at Bacchanal on Sundays to cook for the crowds. The shop transformed into a speakeasy of sorts, with live music and food. Eventually, after a few fights with the city, Bacchanal became the fully functioning outdoor kitchen and jazz club it is today.

Visitors enter Bacchanal through the wine store. Dozens of varieties of wine from around the world are available by the bottle or opt for a by-the-glass selection. Here you can also choose from the selection of cheeses to customize your own cheeseboard. Chefs add tasty accompaniments including cornichons, olives, candied nuts and bread. In addition to the wine, beer and cheese options, Bacchanal offers a revolving seasonal full menu.

We arrived around lunchtime and were lucky enough to beat the crowds. After ordering wine and beer, we decided to split the whole grilled fish. We made our way to the patio, waiting for the live music to start. Trees provided shade, and large fans added a nice breeze, making for a comfortable experience.

We devoured the flavorful fish and enjoyed the gypsy jazz performance. It was a perfectly relaxing afternoon and a lovely respite from the humid summer weather. My visit to Bacchanal was the highlight of my New Orleans trip. I highly recommend checking it out the next time you visit the Crescent City.
