Vegas and Sports

by John Wroblewski

May 24, 2017

I recently went to Las Vegas for a bachelor party. Because I arrived early to assist the host, I was able to see the Las Vegas 51’s — the top minor league affiliate of the New York Mets.

The 51’s play home games at Cashman Field. Opened in 1983, it’s the third-oldest stadium in Triple A baseball. From a fan’s perspective, it is a beautiful facility, offering clear sightlines from every seat. The lawn seating area in right field is popular.

Parts of the stadium, like the clubhouse, weight room and batting cages are outdated and sub-par, which led to discussions about a new stadium. With the expansion NHL Golden Knights starting play later this year and the NFL Rams moving to Las Vegas in 2019, the increased emphasis on sports should further prod new stadium construction.

Despite an 8–1 loss, it was a fantastic night at the ballpark; perfect weather accompanied a clear sky. It was hard to believe the glitz and glamour of The Strip are just minutes away. The serenity versus the insanity provides an interesting juxtaposition.

One more thing worth mentioning: The staff at Cashman Field seems to enjoy working there. Everyone was helpful and each had a story to relay, making us feel welcome.

I thought the baseball game would be something different to try in Las Vegas, but I enjoyed it so much I plan on making it part of every trip during baseball season in Vegas.
