The Global Traveler staff is an active bunch, and several wrote about their distance runs. Danielle Pitonyak blogged about the New York City Half Marathon in March, John Wroblewski wrote in January about beginning to train again, and last year Monique Barrett wrote about her activities and aspirations to travel to international running events. I had the opportunity to travel to an event of my own this weekend, the Tough Mudder that took place in Doswell, Va. Alternatives to distances races have been gaining popularity, and several different types of adventure races and mud runs built a huge following over the past few years. Tough Mudder is the longest mud run, with each event consisting of a 10–12 mile run with 20–30 obstacles. I ran this, my second Tough Mudder, with a handful of friends and had even more fun than the first time around. I was certainly better prepared, as well as pleased with the pleasant, warm weather. I ran my first in a brisk New Jersey November that did not make certain water obstacles any easier. With different course layouts all over the United States and across three continents, Tough Mudder is a great event to travel to and one I hope to participate in again in the future. — Rob Setzman, digital coordinator and account executive
