I mentioned an eye injury in a previous blog. I was in Puerto Rico staying at the Bahia Beach Resort and Spa about 35 miles from the San Juan — and the airport and the car rental agencies — when I sustained the injury.

I’m a Hertz Gold member and had been told during a previous rental in Tucson, Ariz., it wasn’t necessary to list other drivers on the rental. That seemed odd to me, but I took the agent at her word.

Still, I had a nagging feeling about it, and since I couldn’t see and eyesight is usually a prerequisite for driving, I called the agency in San Juan to ask about listing my sister as a driver on the rental agreement. I explained the situation and was told: No. We can’t do this over the phone. You’ll have to come into the office.

I explained again: The problem is I can’t see to drive. May I fax you a copy of my sister’s driver’s license?

No. We can’t do this over the phone. You’ll have to come into the office.

But please. I can’t see to drive. If you fax the agreement to the hotel, I will sign it and we’ll return it with a copy of my sister’s driver’s license and any other form of identification you may need.

No. We can’t do this over the phone. You’ll have to come into the office.

But I can’t see. How do you expect me to drive 35 miles to your office?

Just be very, very careful.
