Tips for Winter Travel

by Mark Branle

Feb 3, 2011

The winter season is in full gear, and the Northeast has been hit with record-breaking amounts of snow, ice and frozen rain. I think it’s important to know how to travel safely in these conditions and what you can do to make your winter traveling go as smoothly as possible. I came across an article discussing tips for winter air travel and driving:

  • Signing up for airline alerts is the quickest way to see if changes or cancellations have been made to your flight, and they can come right to your phone or email
  • Most airlines will let passengers rebook their flight for free if a major storm is threatening the area
  • Make sure to have the essentials such as prescriptions, glasses or toiletries in your purse or carry-on, in case you have to stay overnight at the terminal
  • It’s always a good idea to pack a few snacks or drinks in case of a delay; airport food can get expensive

For winter driving, one of the best ways to protect yourself is by getting a type of roadside assistance, such as an AAA membership. A few other tips are

  • Never use cruise control when driving on snow or slick surfaces
  • If you happen to skid, steer the car in the direction you want the front of your car to go; do not slam on the brakes

I hope these tips help you get through your winter travel! — Amanda Smith, advertising and editorial coordinator
