I was reflecting recently on some of my more memorable travel experiences — the sights I’d seen, the people I’d met, the accomodations I’d enjoyed. As images crowded into my mind, I realised that, especially regarding the places where I’ve laid my head, I recall most of all the little added touches extended to me by a staff member that made my stay all the more special.
A few recent examples immediately spring to mind. During my stay in Los Angeles in December for the GT Tested Awards celebration, the Hotel Palomar Los Angeles — Westwood was my home base. While I enjoyed the amazing view from my room and the comfortable bed, what sticks in my mind is the welcome of the valets and bellmen at the front door. Whenever I left the hotel, several friendly faces greeted me, and someone always made sure before I even hit the sidewalk that my transportation was secured and I had everything I needed for my day. On every return, I was again immediately greeted with a genuine smile and a “Welcome back!” From the moment I arrived at this property, I felt my presence was important to every person who worked there.
I also experienced that warm welcome at The Peninsula Beverly Hills, even though I was not an overnight guest there. When I arrived for a business meeting and, later, the Global Traveler party, the smartly dressed pages, doormen and valets impressed me with their attentiveness in helping me find my way and the warmth of their greetings.
Over and over again, these are the kinds of memories that pop up when I think of the four- and five-star accomodations I’ve enjoyed. Yes, high-thread-count bed linens and a wide range of exclusive bath products on the vanity are nice, but what seals the deal for me are the personal touches which only a thoughtful human being striving to provide great service can deliver. I recall the cheerful doorman at the The Langham, Auckland who always remembered and greeted me with my not-so-easy to remember (or pronounce) name, and the concierge at The Roosevelt in New York City who took the time to dig up some great restaurant recommendations and made sure my husband and I had clear directions on how to get to each. Without that human element, a fine property is just that: a building on a piece of land.
