On our first day our waiter asked us, “How are you doing today?”
“Was he kidding?” I thought. “We are in paradise.” I answered, “We are having a wonderful time.” His response: “That’s good to hear; keep it up.”
We later learned this waiter’s name was Randall. He, along with the entire staff of The Caves in Negril, Jamaica, went out of their way to make sure we did “keep it up” during our recent four-night stay. The Caves is one of four hotels and five villas operated by Island Outpost, owned by famous music producer Chris Blackwell of Island Records.
The property caught my eye as it is a small all-inclusive with only 12 rooms. I interpreted “all-inclusive” as no decisions to be made, and “small” as no lines or chaos, just peace and quiet — a perfect break from what seemed like an unusually busy year.
Life at The Caves is simple and relaxing. With numerous private spots boasting lounge chairs and umbrellas hanging off the cliffs, multiple tables at lunch, and dinner on the edge of the second-story terrace, there is no rush to be anywhere. No need to get there early; there is always a good seat in the house. Need a little adventure? The Caves sits on the cliffs of Negril, so the water is accessed through daring 10-, 20- and 30-foot jumps (though ladders down to the tide are also an option). Take a big leap, then return to a hammock with your heart still racing and listen to the tide.
We were lucky to secure the butterfly room, a second-floor one bedroom which opened its shutters to yet another stunning sea view. We kept the windows open all day and enjoyed the breeze passing through. In the evening, air conditioning was available for a comfortable sleep.
The food and drinks were divine. Each bartender had his own special drink; and if he happened to be missing from the bar, you were encouraged to go in and help yourself. The breakfast menu was unlimited, though the banana pancakes seemed to be everyone’s favorite. Dinner and lunch each had two choices, but most opted for a “combo” — a taste of everything. Why stress yourself trying to decide?
Everyone deserves a getaway as relaxing as a visit to The Caves. As I reflect on my stay, what I treasure most was the insight I gained from Randall on that first day. In paradise or not, we are in control of how we interpret the experience we have. I traveled back to reality with the mission to “keep it up.”
