A Holiday History Trip in the Nation’s Capital

by Marie Edwards

Apr 29, 2019

i spent the holiday weekend in Washington, D.C. It was somewhat of a history lesson for my 12-year-old son. We visited the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History; the National Museum of American History; the Smithsonian National Zoological Park; Arlington Cemetery (he wondered who Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was), where he watched the Changing of the Guard; the Vietnam Veterans Memorial; the Lincoln Memorial; the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum; the Korean War Veterans Memorial… and the list goes on. Needless to say, we were busy!

MonumentIf you haven’t been to Washington, D.C., in a while, I would suggest a visit this time of year because the weather was fabulous! In addition to all these great spots, we had some fabulous dinners, including Cactus Cantina with tasty Tex Mex and a few too many pitchers of sangria. Tony & Joe’s Seafood Place, located on the Potomac in Georgetown, had fabulous seafood, great service and some fun cocktails. Lastly, we enjoyed our holiday dinner at Osteria Morini on the Anacostia River, with lovely views, near the Navy Yard and the Nationals Park baseball stadium, and great Italian food.

Something fun and new we hadn’t had before was orange wine. You may have heard of it … it’s a white wine that has a bit of an orange/cloudy hue when served. It has a bitter, bold and cidery flavor and is a great spring, summer or fall wine. If you haven’t tried it, you might enjoy a white wine with a bit of a zing!

Can’t wait to see you at the next stop!

The Bishop’s Lodge’s Bunkhouse: A Rustic, Historic Getaway

Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a small town that’s big on historic landmarks, buildings, parks and Western lore. Many of its most fascinating structures also happen to be hotels, including Bishop’s Lodge, which extends the city’s specific charms from the streets into the public areas and private suites and rooms. While most of the properties within historic buildings are upscale, Bishop’s Lodge is now a member of Auberge Resorts Collection thanks to a painstaking restoration, luxury appointments, commitment to personal service and wide range of exclusive activities.

In the late 1800s, eyeglass manufacturer George Washington Wells became the founder and owner of the largest eyeglass company in the town by merging with several smaller lens manufacturers in Southbridge, Massachusetts.
