Talking Travel with Evita Robinson

by John Wroblewski

Jan 7, 2024

While looking for interesting folks in the travel industry, I came across Evita Robinson, whose story really intrigued me. Her unique contribution to the travel community made her a great choice for an interview.

As the founder of Nomadness Travel Tribe, Robinson heads a network of 30,000 Black and Brown nomads responsible for contributing more than $50 million annually to the travel industry. Her story and love of travel preceded Nodmadness by several years.

Born in New York, Robinson graduated from Iona College but moved to Paris to attend the New York Film Academy. By the age of 25, the three-time expat had also lived in Thailand and Japan.

With her passion, experience and knowledge, Robinson saw a glaring omission in travel. In 2011 Robinson founded Nomadness Travel Tribe, dedicated to making travel more accessible to people of color by building a community of travelers.

Despite a large percentage of the members being women, there is no favoritism. In fact, you do not even have to be a person of color to join. The only real requirements to join are a passion for travel and one passport stamp. Robinson explains this clearly in our interview. In other interviews I saw Robinson bristle at the suggestion of elitism, stating Nomadness is far from that. She asserts Nomadness is inclusive to all. You just need to enjoy travel and want to be in a group of like-minded travelers.

In our interview Robinson discussed what being part of the tribe means, along with what the organization does. There have been group trips, festivals, newsletters and more. They are very active on social media, interacting and connecting folks with each other.

Robinson’s passion is palpable and made me want to learn more. I might not be part of the Nomadness Travel Tribe, but thanks to Robinson, I have a better understanding of travel through the eyes of a person of color and an appreciation for what Robinson and Nomadness do.
