South Boston’s L Street Tavern

A few weeks before Winter Storm Juno came to town, I visited my mother up in Boston. She lives in Dorchester, but we decided to spend one of our days together in South Boston, better known as “Southie.” I am a huge fan of Boston-based films. Some of the best movies of the last 20 years were filmed in Boston, including Good Will Hunting, Mystic RiverThe Departed and The Town. Even if the film isn’t good, I’ll still watch it just to see Boston. Many Boston-based films are also set in South Boston. One cold evening, we stopped for a few drinks at the L Street Tavern, a small dive bar on the corner of L and Eighth streets in South Boston. Now I have to be honest: The only reason we wanted to go was because we wanted to see the bar from Good Will Hunting. The L Street Tavern was once a rundown hole in the wall but has since been nicely renovated. The facade has been redone, and there are a few pictures and memorabilia from Good Will Hunting inside. There are a lot of places like this that lose their charm after being featured in a major film, but not the L Street Tavern. I even talked to a few locals who told me the bar barely changed at all. There have been a few updates to the overall appearance, but other than that, it’s the same old place. — Matt McNeal, account executive
