Miami Beach has quickly become one of my favorite destinations, if nothing else than for its incomparable landscape of new and unique boutique hotels. I never imagined I could be as wowed as I was during my stay at The James Royal Palm earlier this year, until I passed through the entrance to the new SLS South Beach.

Like The James, SLS South Beach has a totally unique feel. The tallest Art Deco building on the strip, the property was originally built in 1939 and has been totally restored and revamped, with interiors designed by Philippe Starck. The traditional lobby has been replaced by an open kitchen for The Bazaar by José Andrés. Quotations in varied handwriting, fonts and languages graffiti the otherwise white walls, contrasted by red and black carpet and drapes. The focal point of the room is a bull wearing a bright pink mask.

Continuing into the dining space, I was taken aback by the high ceilings and printed screens which create the illusion of the walls being lined with bookshelves. The large, comfortable chairs and tables create the warm ambiance of a ski lodge rather than a beachfront hotel. Only a few more steps and you are on the terrace overlooking the first of two pools. Here I found my heaven. Like a scene from an outdoor European café, the long tables with mismatched pillows seem the perfect spot to pass a day. The bookshelf screens continue outside with large, dark lamps outlining the room, perfectly transitioning from the indoor space. I could have spent hours taking in the details of these three rooms.

I am eager to return to SLS South Beach for a full tour and a sample of their fine cuisine. I can only imagine the surprises that continue throughout the entire property. Later this month, sbe, the owners of SLS South Beach, will open The Redbury South Beach just a few blocks away. Just another reason to return to South Beach and see how this property will further complement this impressive crowd!
