There is something very earthy to me about cross-country road trips. Since I hadn’t done one in a few years, I jumped at the chance when my nephew invited me on his driving trip to Houston. We were going to leave the car there for my sister (who was spending the winter there with her husband) and fly back.
My nephew and I loaded the car with water and healthy snacks (as per my blog of last week), along with a bunch of CDs (half chosen by each of us). We left the Chicago area before sunrise. The 1,050 mile trip mainly goes through Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas before reaching Texas. There are also brushes with Kentucky, Tennessee and Louisiana.
This was a great way to see parts of the country I wouldn’t ordinarily visit. We always sought out local restaurants for meals. We also made a few “tourist” stops, such as the Mississippi River and Memphis (no, we did not see Elvis).
I enjoyed spending that time with my nephew and experiencing the country with him. We make several trips to Houston every year, and I wouldn’t want to drive the rest, but this drive was a lot of fun.
