I remember my first experience at NYC’s Eataly; I was in awe of the immense selection available in one place, each option more delectable than the last. I was elated to learn the food hall was coming to Philadelphia. And then I visited Madrid and discovered Platea Madrid, which puts all other food-hall-style markets to shame. Platea is an ex-cinema converted into a modern-day food market, serving up drinks, regional and international cuisine and entertainment. I entered through the fruit markets, where the colors of the produce were as succulent as the fruits and vegetables were sure to be. On the ground level, I went from stall to stall, enjoying Spanish delicacies including chorizo, meat pie, croquetas, mussels and pickles, accompanied with local beer. I was full by the time I ventured downstairs, where international fare options include a hot dog stand, Asian specialties and Mexican food. I wished I had saved some room, because the food and cocktails here looked equally as enticing. Michelin-starred cuisine from Paco Roncero, Pepe Solla and Marcos Morán is also available. In the top floor bar, I settled in to a cushioned banquette for a signature Champagne cocktail and to watch as aerial acrobats performed for diners. As it got later in the evening, Platea filled with Madrileños; it is clear this new venture is a popular spot for locals and social gatherings for people of all ages. The crowd ranged from young families to older couples to twenty-somethings out with a group of friends. It was nice to be part of the city vibe. The excitement for Platea is palpable in the buzz. The atmosphere at Platea, coupled with the number of options and the gourmet quality of the food and drink, makes for a must-stop on your next visit to Madrid.
